ArtRoom Collective Studio #8

In this Artist Spotlight, we connect with Chandler Strange of Studio #8 to dive into her world of art and inspiration.

What kind of art do you create?

I work primarily in graphite and watercolor. I also do photography, print making, and floral design.

Can you share your journey as an artist? What inspired you to pursue this path?

It has always been my path, since I have memory, I wanted to draw. When I was little I lived near some famous classical artist, who had a working studio, and this inspired the type of technically precise art I wanted to create as an adult. I studied art at the Pratt institute in New York, and worked in the art world there for a decade before moving to Colorado to start a family and my own art practice. Before moving I studied classical drawing techniques with the Grand Central Atelier and that has a huge impact on the way I draw now.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in rural Maryland, but moved to New York City as a teenager.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by plants, the female figure, birds, and pollinators, also my sense of spirituality informs much of work.

How long have you been producing art?

My whole life.

What do you enjoy doing outside of creating art?

I own a flower farm business, Rainbow Springs Flower Farm, and I am a mom to two amazing kids, so I am pretty busy these days.

Can you share any upcoming projects or exhibitions we should look out for?

Right now I am excited to soon be offering numbered editions of high quality prints of my flower greyscale drawings, they will be available in the art room and on a soon to be completed fine art website.

When is your favorite time of day to create and why?

The morning, mostly because my eyes are getting older and the light is so bright but also gentle.

Most adventurous thing you’ve done in your life?

It has been a wild life, I have been lucky enough to live all over the world, and travel to some pretty incredible places, and lived in Hong Kong, where everyday felt like an amazing adventure.

Favorite piece you've created?

Probably my large drawing of the Ostrich... the first image above.

What's something not many people know about you?

I am passionate about activism, and right now I am working on raising money for our local Planned Parenthood.

What are you selling in your studio right now?

Greeting cards, my children’s book ‘Over in the Meadow’, my collection of flower alphabets, and large prints of my flower drawings are coming very soon.

Anything else you'd like to add…..

Just that I love this community in the ArtRoom and our beautiful Durango. Lots of gratitude.
