ArtRoom Collective Studio #8
We caught up with metalsmith Jennifer Floyd in her ArtRoom studio to talk about creativity, travel, and the joy of working with silver and copper.
What kind of art do you create?
I am a metalsmith and I work primarily in silver, copper and enamel.
Can you share your journey as an artist? What inspired you to pursue this path?
When I retired from teaching elementary school I couldn't wait to explore my passion for art. I started taking classes at The Four Corners Gem and Mineral Club. The classes inspired me to pursue my love of making jewelry, belt buckles and other accessories.
Where did you grow up?
I’m still growing up, but I spent my childhood in Maryland.
What inspires you?
Good people and adventure.
How long have you been producing art?
I have been producing art for as long as I can remember. I have always enjoyed exploring a variety of art mediums. I took painting classes and enjoyed all kinds of crafts as a child, I still do!
What do you enjoy doing outside of creating art?
I love to travel, explore, and spend time with friends. I'm working on improving my mountain biking skills and skate skiing skills.
Can you share any upcoming projects or exhibitions we should look out for?
I am looking forward to being a part of the 28th Annual Strater Artisan Show and Artisan Holiday Sale on November 22nd. There are many talented artists showcasing their creations. It is one of my favorite places to shop (and sell) for the holidays.
When is your favorite time of day to create and why?
I have always found that I am most inspired in the mornings. I often sketch out designs when I am feeling fresh and inspired. However, evenings are when I work on producing my designs.
Most adventurous thing you’ve done in your life?
I have been finding so much adventure and joy in the last few years through "adventure travel" on bikes. I have been so lucky to explore the pacific northwest on bike, plus Montana and Glacier National Park. More recently, I have biked with my husband and dear friends in Norway and Denmark.
What are you selling in your studio right now?
Copper and Silver earrings and necklaces, handmade belt buckles, handcrafted leather belts and handmade gifts.
